Are You Using Your Golf Mind Properly to Improve Your Golf Game and Mental Confidence, Calm Nerves?

Your conscious mind is designed to analyse, question and initiate learning (amongst some other things) but for our purposes here let's just say that it's working whenever you are trying to figure out a new skill or analyse a situation.

Your unconscious is designed to run on auto-pilot. Like tying your shoe laces without thinking (after the conscious mind struggled trying to learn it) or driving a car, riding a bike, getting dressed. Any thing you do without having to "Consciously" think about how to perform.

In golf it is very important for you to accept that it is a target driven game. You want to send your ball from where it is to a specific target somewhere up front, either in the fairway or onto a green. The targets you pick must be precise, not "more or less" in the fairway, but to a precise point - ALWAYS - every shot from Driver to Putter. Target driven golf, everything moves toward the target, your thinking, your body, your swing, your ball, is the only way to play to your potential.

So what part of your thinking should be assigned to what part of the Target - Swing process?

Your conscious mind analyses the shot facing you, balancing up requirements against your skill level, weather conditions, course etc. In other words course and self management balanced against the shot facing you.

Your unconscious mind has the responsibility of using the information gathered balanced against the task required in order to move your body in an intricate and balanced way to make a "Golf Swing" (body move) that causes your golf club to impact with the ball in such a way as to propel it to your designated target.

So in a nutshell your conscious mind selects a target and your unconscious moves the body to send the ball there. This is a naturally occurring process if you think about it. If you are going out and you need to put your shoes on, you consciously think about it but then you put them on without having to think how to do it. You decide to go for a drive but you drive without having to think about it.

The unfortunate thing is that probably the vast majority (could I even say 99% of amateurs?)do not use their mind, the conscious - unconscious connection, in proper harmony.

If you can play a shot like it really doesn't matter, when it matters the most, by switching off the conscious thinking and handing over in complete trust to your unconscious to make the shot happen while you remain completely in the present moment, with no thought of what could happen, good or bad, no concern about the outcome, then you will start playing your best golf.

If you play in this mode you will play with confidence and magically find that your mind is able to calm your golf nerves. You see, think about this, run it past yourself and how do you feel about the following statement?

If you are playing in the present (handed over to the unconscious) then you have no thought of the outcome and no thought about past shots, so you really will swing with confidence and you cannot be nervous about something you are not worried about can you?

Golf Stance - Getting the Stance Right is Crucial - is one of the biggest questions in regards to the golf stance. The answer is that it will depend on which club you are using and the longer the club, the wider apart they should be. They should be more than shoulder width for the driver, roughly shoulder width for your long irons and fairway woods, and slightly less for your shorter clubs. When setting up with your longer clubs, be sure that your weight is slightly tilted towards your back foot. Keep your knees bent a little which will help you have more flex in your ..
