Most golfers just don't have the time to go to the practice green everyday to practice putting. So in most cases the golfer gets little to no putting practice at all. A lack of practice is one of the main reasons golfers miss so many putts. But practicing on the carpet at home is not really good either. That is, if you are using a ball. I want you to think for a minute about putting practice and what you are really trying to do. It's not about making practice putts as much as it is an exercise in developing your feel and making your stroke more consistent. If you have read my previous putting articles, you know about the impact reflex and how it affects your putting. It has just as much effect on practice putts as it does in the real thing. Well, maybe not quite as much because of the difference in internal pressure supplies the body with a little extra adrenalin. But the effect is still significant enough to make most putting practice counterproductive. This is especially true if you are already having problems with the putter. If you want to putt better next time you play, spend about 5 or 10 minutes a night making putting strokes without a ball. Work solely on the feel of the putter as it goes back and through. Try to make each stroke exactly the same.
What you will get is better putting because you will have trained yourself to be more aware of the feel of your stroke, and less aware of the impact with the ball. But if you want to, you can continue fighting the ball, putter and everything else involved in making a putt.
