The driver is the most difficult club in the bag to hit and requires good swing mechanics in order to hit it well consistently. It is important to make sure that you are using the right kind of driver in order to maximize distance and accuracy. If your driver club head speed is under 100 mph then you may want to consider a regular stiff flex shaft and a loft greater than 10 degrees. On the other hand, if your driver club head speed is over 100mph then you should consider a stiff flex driver with a loft under 10 degrees for maximum distance and control. Wrist strength plays another vital role in developing greater club head speed. Do wrist curls using free weights or a machine at the gym to build up wrist strength as this will help you to generate greater club head speed. A long drive is the result of many factors including high club head speed, proper launch angle and proper ball spin. If any of these factors go wrong then the result can be a poor drive that ends up in the rough and short. Grip pressure can also affect your drives. You want to use about 30% of your maximum grip pressure when driving the golf ball. Do not choke the club as it is not necessary and usually promotes a tense body which produces poor swing mechanics.
Tension can lead to poor golf swings. Most people get tense before a golf shot because they tend to think too much and care too much about results. You would be better off simply focusing on your targets and looking and reacting to them and trying to have fun. Do not get too serious about the game as it is supposed to be fun. If you hit a bad shot, try to figure out what could have gone wrong, learn something but then forget about it and move on trusting that the next shot will be a great one. Teeing the ball the right height can also make a difference in improving your driving distance and accuracy. You want half the ball to be above the top of the driver when you setup to the ball. This will promote the right launch angle for maximum distance and carry. Also if you want to increase club head speed and create greater lag or leverage then think of the club as a whip and feel yourself whipping the club through the hitting zone. Struggling with the driver and hitting slices is a common problem for many golfers. The ‘Dave Way Instant Golf Slice Cure’ system can teach you simple ways to hit the ball straighter and farther fast. Click here to learn more.
