What is the proper golf stance? This is one of the foundations of the swing and if you get this wrong then it's impossible to make a sound swing.
Avoid tension
Probably the most important thing is simply to not be too tense. Most people have no idea how tight they are over the ball until they just try and grip the club lightly.
Make sure you focus on gripping the club loosely because if you do this every other part of your body will naturally stay relaxed. However if you grip it too tightly your arms and shoulders will naturally stiffen and tension is one of the biggest swing killers.
How wide should your feet be?
This is one of the biggest questions in regards to the golf stance. The answer is that it will depend on which club you are using and the longer the club, the wider apart they should be.
They should be more than shoulder width for the driver, roughly shoulder width for your long irons and fairway woods, and slightly less for your shorter clubs.
When setting up with your longer clubs, be sure that your weight is slightly tilted towards your back foot. Keep your knees bent a little which will help you have more flex in your swing.
Ball positioning
What about the ball positioning for the golf stance? Again this will vary based on the club, and here are the general guidelines you should follow.
For the driver you should have the ball roughly 1 inch behind your front foot, and with each succeeding set of clubs (long irons, middle irons, and short irons) it should be another inch back. Therefore the ball should be about 3 inches back with your short irons of its' position with your driver.
A rule to remember is that the farther back in your stance the ball is, the more right to left action you will get on it. Conversely the farther forward it is the more left to right it will go.
Therefore your positioning might be slightly ahead of or behind the guidelines I just laid out, depending on what you are trying to accomplish. To sum up, if you get the golf stance wrong it will impact every other part of your swing, so follow this advice to be sure it's correct.
