Golf Putting Techniques And Tips

Putting is a critical component to the game of golf and is really a great equalizer because almost anyone can learn how to be a great putter. A key mechanical tip about putting is to keep your eyes directly over the ball as this will help you to see the line of the putt much better. Also you want to minimize the use of your wrists during the putting stroke, instead use your shoulder like a pendulum to make the putter head move in a consistent way.

In addition try not to stand too far from the ball as this will make seeing the line that much more difficult since your eyes will not be directly over the ball. The regular interlocking grip is sufficient if you are looking for a putting grip to use. It is important to not get too caught up in putting mechanics or searching for a perfect putter. Simply pick one mechanical approach you like and buy a putter that you feel comfortable with and stick with them. To really become a great putter focus on learning how to master short putts and the mental game.

Short putting is critical to making putts often so be sure to spend a lot of time hitting these types of putts from every angle on the green, uphill, downhill, sidehill and straight. Hit lots of 5 to 10 footers especially before a round to warm up your putting stroke and also to develop more confidence that comes from seeing the ball go in the hole which happens often with short putts. This does not mean you should not hit long putts. You should definitely spend appropriate time on longer putts especially if you are finding yourself having trouble with distance control.

How you think when you are putting is important. It may be best to turn putting and the game of golf in general into a reaction sport. This means that you should not spend too much time over the putt before hitting it. Instead simply pick a target and look and react trusting that your natural athletic ability and previous practice and experience will send the ball the right direction and the right speed. Thinking too much when you are over the putt usually results in a bad stroke and poor results and can even lead to the putting yips so quiet your mind and simply look and react for best results.

When it comes to reading greens you should trust your first impression about the break of the putt. It may be best to turn every putt into a straight putt so if you think a putt will break 3 feet to the left then pick a small target 3 feet to the right of the hole and putt to that. You should also trust your feel about the speed of a putt and not think too much about it. However do not rush reading greens, give yourself adequate time to develop an accurate first impression.

Also remember that nobody reads greens perfectly all the time so if you misread a putt simply forget about it and trust that the next time you will make an accurate read. Putting can reduce your handicap significantly however you should not ignore the other aspects of your game. The ‘How To Break 80’ system can help you improve every area of your game and have you shooting in the 70’s quickly. Click here to learn more.
