Golf Mental Tips For Better Scores Fast

Learning how to lower your golf handicap can be a tough challenge. The mental game of golf can contribute to helping to cut strokes off your scorecard. Golf can be a very mental game so learning how to think well on the course can make a big difference in many cases to reducing your scores. Here are a few mental game tips that may help to lower your handicap:

Tip 1: Stay in the present

It is all too easy to start thinking about what we will shoot especially if you have a good round going. Do not total your score on every hole but rather focus on playing one shot at a time and total your scores after the round is over. That way you will not let your current score affect the way you hit your shots.

Tip 2: Relax

Tension can really mess up your golf swing so you need to learn to relax and not care too much about the results of each shot. It is ok to get a little irritated if you hit a bad shot but do not remain angry before you hit the next shot. When you hit a poor shot simply learn whatever you can and move on believing that the next shot will be great.

Tip 3: Play conservatively

Do not hit risky shots on the course. Just because a playing partner is hitting a certain shot does not mean you have to try and match them. They may have a much higher skill level which makes that shot easy for them but if you tried it you would not succeed most of the time. Always play high percentage shots that you have a good chance of pulling off.

Tip 4: Develop a selective memory

It is important to learn to forget bad shots and remember great shots. Do not get too upset if you hit a poor shot however it is ok to feel really good if you do hit a great shot. Celebrate inside if you are too shy to express yourself externally or if you think that it is rude or too cocky. This will ingrain the great shots and will make the game much more fun and will also boost your confidence levels which will only make you a better player. When you hit a bad shot then learn whatever you can from it and simply move on. Never dwell of poor golf shots as it will not make you a better player. Remember that the mental game is only one aspect to becoming the best golfer you can be so be sure to spend time on the practice range and puttting greens fine tuning your swing and short game as nothing can substitute a strong work ethic.
