Golf Backswing Secrets

If you've played a lot of golf or are just beginning to play then I'm sure you understand that the golf backswing can be pretty complex and is a essential to hitting the ball and scoring well. In actuality, the backswing is not really that complicated, but it is extremely easy to over-complicate it and make things more difficult for ourselves. I'd like to give you a few of my favorite tips for the golf backswing that have really catapulted my game to a higher level and can definitely do the same for yours. Next time you're on the range just keep these things in your mind and try practicing these techniques and tips before hitting the 1st tee.

1) Keep your head still. Say this over and over to yourself and don't let your head move up and down or back and forth during your golf swing. Many people like to move their head up towards the sky and back towards their back foot as their body turns on their backswing. This is one of the worst things you can do with your backswing because it leads to poor clubface-to-ball contact. Your distance and accuracy will suffer as a result of moving your head. If you can think about keeping your head very still over the ball as you turn then your swing will be off to a great start.

2) Keep your front foot planted on the ground and try not to pick up the heel of your front foot. This is a very common thing to do when taking the club back, but it causes unnecessary body movement that can make the backswing more complicated than it needs to be. By keeping your front foot all the way down you can simplify the backswing a great deal and have more consistency in your swing.

3) Don't be afraid to stop the club short of parallel at the top of your swing. There is a very common misconception, especially among beginners, that you have to take the club back to parallel to generate more power and to hit a full golf shot. If you take the club back so that the shaft is parallel to the ground then you might be ok - many experienced players do that and can get away with it because their fundamentals are so good. The point here is that you don't have to though. You can generate just as much torque and power but taking the club back to just before parallel and your consistency will improve. It's just a fact that it's easier to hit the ball solidly when you have a shorter swing, so take advantage of that fact.

As I said, use these golf backswing tips the next time you're on the course, but try practicing these things on the range first. You may want to practice with all of your clubs; wedges, mid-irons, low-irons and your driver. Once you're hitting the ball more consistently and with better contact and trajectory on the range then head out to the course and school your friends!
