Swinging a golf club well can seem complicated and it can be easy to get frustrated very quickly. The first step is to learn how to hold the club. There are a few different grips you can use including the interlocking, baseball and overlapping grip. The most popular grip is the interlocking one and it seems to be the best one for most players. This grip is quite simple to execute, just take the little finger of the right hand and wrap it around the index finger of the left hand (this applies to right handed players). Grip pressure is important and too many amateurs grip the club too tightly. The ideal grip pressure should be around a quarter of your full grip pressure for most clubs. Unless you are hitting from deep rough then you may want to increase the grip pressure to around 80 percent of your maximum. Posture is another important aspect of the setup. Make sure you bend at the hips and not the spine, try to keep the spine upright. The width of the stance will vary depending on the club. The longer the club the wider your stance should get until shoulder width for the driver. Let your hands hang naturally with gravity bringing them to a stop and grip the club at that position.
Make sure the club face is square at setup and is pointing at the target. Your weight should be evenly distributed between both the right and left side at setup. Start the backswing using a one piece takeaway so do not break your wrists, just turn your shoulders and go as far back as you can. Both feet should be on the ground at the top of the backswing. Initiate the downswing with a weight shift towards the target before you begin to lower the club. This will help to further load the club with energy and will assist in developing greater club head speed at impact. Use your left hand to bring the club down, avoid getting your right hand involved too much otherwise this can lead to an outside to in path that can cause poor golf shots. Make sure to not look up and make a complete finish and also be sure to stay balanced. Keep the swing as simple as you can for best results.
