Correcting Common Golfing Flaws

Every golfer suffers from one flaw or another in their game whether it be related to the full swing or the short game. Here are some common flaws and their potential fixes:

Correcting A Golf Slice Shot:

Slicing a golf ball is a common problem among most amateurs and beginner players. This is because having an outside to in swing path is very easy to develop even with the smallest swing flaw. Thus to get rid of the golf slice you need to look at many aspects of your swing. The first thing is to ensure that the club head is square at impact so make sure that the face of the club is not open or pointing to the right of the target.

The next thing to check is your stance. Make sure that your feet are pointing directly at the target and not to the left of it (right handed players) which is the usual setup for a slice golf swing. Another useful tip to keep in mind to stop slicing is to keep your right hand passive, instead use your left hand to start both the back swing and the downswing. Do not lift your head up before you make contact with the ball as this will cause a slice also. Let your head lift up with your shoulders as the follow through completes.

Fixing A Golf Hook Shot:

This shot usually results if you setup with a closed club face so make sure your club face is pointing at the target and not to the left of it. This shot can also occur if you release the club too early so focus on releasing the club further in the downswing. This can be easily accomplished by simply taking the wrists out of the swing and focusing on the shoulder turn to naturally cause a proper release of the club. If you try to get the wrists involved too much in the swing it tends to result in poor releases which can cause poor golf shots.

Correcting A Fat Golf Shot:

This shot can occur if you change your spine angle during the downswing. Try to maintain the same spine angle and do not lunge at the ball lowering the spine and causing the swing plane to lower resulting in hitting the ground too early.

Fixing A Thin/Topped Golf Shot:

This shot usually occurs when you lift the spine too early before impact thus causing the club to rise up too much resulting in hitting the top of the ball. Focus on maintaining the same spine angle and this is usually best accomplished by first slowing down your swing and being aware of your spine angle and its relation to the swing plane. Maintaining a constant head position through the swing is a good way to keep an ideal spine angle that promotes good ball striking.
