Hitting the driver well is one of the best experiences in the game of golf. Unfortunately the driver is also the most difficult club to build any real consistency with. The reason for this is that even small mistakes in swing mechanics can lead to big variations in results. Thus the first step to hitting the driver well is to master basic swing mechanics. One way to improve your driver swing is to spend more time hitting shorter shots like wedge shots. If you cannot hit wedges well then you will continue to struggle with the driver. Remember that the full swing is simply an extension of the shorter swings like wedge shots. Also keep in mind that it takes energy to hit drives so if you are always pounding away with the driver you risk wearing yourself out quickly and will become ineffective at getting better. We all want to know how to hit the driver as far as the pros do on television. It is unrealistic to expect to hit 300 yard drives consistently without committing to a regular practice routine as well as fitness program. Hitting long drives will require a certain level of fitness so be sure to read our section on golf fitness to help you get stronger and more flexible so you can play the game better.
Lag or leverage is a key component to hitting the driver far and to generate maximum club head speed. Maximum lag is created by releasing the club at the last possible moment before impact. However if you consciously try to do this you will probably produce poor swings and results. One way to increase lag automatically is to start the downswing by exploding your left shoulder (right handed players) up and by also shifting your weight towards the target before bringing the club down from the top of the swing. This will load the club with greater energy so it can be released at impact where it counts. Having powerful wrists is a critical component to long driving. You do not need to look like Arnold Schwarzeneggar but you do need to at least have strong wrists. Go to a gym and do wrist curls with weights once every two to three weeks. Since you are at the gym why not do some bench presses and leg presses also to help strengthen more upper and lower body muscles. Being fitter and stronger will only help you to hit the ball further so do it if you can. While hitting the driver long can help your golf scores, you should not neglect the other areas of your game. The ‘How To Break 80’ golf training program can help you improve every area of your game including improving your driving distance. Click here to learn more. |
