The Beginning Golfer - Rhythm

Beginning golfers often struggle with rhythm and tempo. Many beginning golfers think there is a different tempo for each club. Believe it or not, most professional golfers have the same tempo for each club. Certain clubs can only yield certain distances. By raising the tempo, the beginning golfer does not increase yardage. To add yardage, the beginning golfer should go to a longer club selection.

On the practice range, we urge our beginning golfers to standardize their tempo. Our thinking is that there is one tempo for every full swing. The full swing with the driver is the same tempo as the full swing with the nine iron. An indicator of fluctuating tempo can be gauged at the beginning golfer's finish. If the beginning golfer has an unbalanced finish, that player's tempo is inconsistent. We encourage our beginning golfers to score their finish.

A 10 is a perfectly balanced finish while a 1 is an off-balanced finish. Score that finish. If your finish is consistently in the 3-4 range, you are elevating your tempo and losing your balance. We want scores of eight and up. Is your rear foot crossing over at finish? Even though Lee Trevino made this move popular, we do not recommend it. When you have hit as many golf shots as Trevino, you can try the walk over. Until then, let's strive for a well postured and balanced finish. One technique to repair lost tempo is to swing one handed with your back hand.

Get that back hand rhythm ironed out by swinging evenly through the ball. Start slowly and build the one handed swing to a reasonable tempo. Once you find it, swing three more times. Step back over the ball and use that learning experience to recreate the right tempo.
